Plant in deep, rich, fertile, very well-drained soil in full sun to partial shade. It is especially important that the soil is not water-logged in winter; that spells death to the roots. Space 15-24″ apart. Once planted, do not disturb. The long taproots can easily break. Intolerant of hot, humid conditions; thrives in areas with cool summers. For best effect, plant in groups of no more than three. Foliage dies back soon after plant flowers. Grows 2-4′ tall. Blooms May-June.
