Kaffir Lime trees are best known for their dense, glossy evergreen foliage, and small buds that produce pure white, fragrant blossoms. Kaffir limes have bumpy skin and flesh that adds a fresh, tangy lime taste to fish and soups. The fruit, leaves, and zest of the Kaffir Lime tree is used by chefs to add exotic flavor to Thai and Cambodian cuisine. The aromatic, citrusy aroma of the fruit and leaves is delightful indoors during cold, winter days.

Planting/Growing Information

Growing Instructions for Planting in the Ground:

  1. Choose your planting site. Trees should be planted 15′ apart (dwarfs 8′) away from the house or other large trees. Citrus trees do not like standing water. They prefer sandy soils. A site that receives full sun works best, but at least 50% sun is needed. Planting on the southern side of a house, lake, or other structure that offers wind protection will help protect your tree from cold.
  2. Clear away weeds and grass. Dig a hole 8-10″ larger than the root ball of the tree.
  3. IMPORTANT: Fill the hole with water.
  4. Remove the tree from the pot and place it in the water-filled hole. Plant at the level it was grown in the nursery (the same level as the top of the root ball). Do not put the bud union (graft) below the soil.
  5. Add soil back to the hole filling all air pockets under and around the root ball. (THIS IS A CRITICAL STEP.)
  6. Newly planted trees should be watered regularly (daily for the first week) for the first three months if rains are inadequate. After the first week, allow the soil to dry down before watering.
  7. DO NOT MIX FERTILIZER IN THE HOLE BEFORE PLANTING. However, you can spread fertilizer on the ground around the tree the same day you plant it. Fertilize at least every 3-4 months (November, March, June, and August). You can fertilize more often, just reduce the amount. Use a citrus fertilizer at a rate of 1-2 lbs. for every year of age. Fertilizer should be applied around the drip line of the tree, not up to the trunk. Fertilizer should contain minor elements, not just N-P-K. You can also use slow release fertilizer. Follow the instructions on the bag.

Chefs the world over are finding creative uses for Finger Limes, which add unique texture and a special ”zing” to dishes. Not your typical lime, this elongated citrus doesn’t peel into segments like you’re used to. Instead, when you cut it open, hundreds of little balls called vesicles pour out. Growing Instructions: Key Lime trees are great indoor and outdoor patio plants. For best results, within 4-6 weeks of receiving your tree, transplant it into a larger pot that drains well and is approximately 8-12″ in diameter to give the roots room to grow. In the spring move your potted tree outdoors into full sun when the threat of frost is past. Bring it back indoors in the fall before the frost season begins. Fertilize regularly with high nitrogen formula, 5-3-3 ratio. Water thoroughly while letting the surface soil dry between watering. Do not overwater. Prune by pinching back the tips of new growth toward the interior branches. Remove any new growth or stems near the soil.
