Think of an amaryllis, and what first comes to mind is a large, showy red flower. ‘Royal Velvet’ takes that image and brings it to life before your eyes with the brightest flower imaginable. Velvety, dark crimson-red petals etched with even darker red veining unfurl to large, perfectly formed flowers. The strong, brilliant color is carried through the stamens tipped with bright yellow anthers. Glamorous and unusual, pot them in white or silver containers and place one at each end of the mantel for an easy but stunning holiday decoration. The long-lasting blooms also work well in vases and cut flower arrangements. Easy to plant and grow. Long-lasting, colorful flowers. Flower stems can be cut and placed in water when buds begin to change color. For longest-lasting blooms, keep plant away from heat and direct sunlight.
Guaranteed to grow.
Height: 20-24″
Hardy in Zones 9-10
Planting tip: If you wish to rebloom the Amaryllis in the fall, stop watering in August and place the bulb, still in the pot, in a cool, dry place for 10-12 weeks. In mid-November, remove the bulb from the old pot; remove dead foliage and old roots, but leave clean, healthy roots intact. Repot in fresh soil as indicated above in a pot only slightly larger than the bulb. If properly cared for, the bulb should bloom in 8-10 weeks.
